So it turns out from James' latest interview that one of his inspirational books is the Legacy of Heorot, which is also one of my favourite ever sci-fi books.

I read it in my youth and I'm still haunted by the images of the Grendels and their impact on a high tech society.

Niven, Pournelle and Barnes are sci-fi Masters and reading a book by just one of them is always a great experience but a book by all three was at the time the geek wet dream.

James, also wondering what you thought of Beowulf's Children. I read it many years later and although I enjoyed it it didn't manage to evoke the same emotions.

Legacy is a truly brilliant action novel. Tension, character, plot... it's got everything.

As for Beowulf's Children, yep it was decent but not in the same class at all.
