So it turns out from James' latest interview that one of his inspirational books is the Legacy of Heorot, which is also one of my favourite ever sci-fi books.
I read it in my youth and I'm still haunted by the images of the Grendels and their impact on a high tech society.
Niven, Pournelle and Barnes are sci-fi Masters and reading a book by just one of them is always a great experience but a book by all three was at the time the geek wet dream.
For anyone who hasn't read the book.

James, also wondering what you thought of Beowulf's Children. I read it many years later and although I enjoyed it it didn't manage to evoke the same emotions. _________________ Member and President of the Will Begman Appreciation Society.

Legacy is a truly brilliant action novel. Tension, character, plot... it's got everything.
As for Beowulf's Children, yep it was decent but not in the same class at all.
Glad it's one of your faves too. _________________ 'A human with a hand outstretched in friendship carries the fangs of a taipan in his palm.' A TaiGethen saying. |
