Now, as any who have bought the mass market of Cry of the Newborn will have discovered. There is a map. It is at the back of the book.

It's something Gollancz are trying out because there is a feeling that some potential readers are put off by maps in the front of books.

But what do you think?

I must admit I prefer the front. You get an idea of the land before starting to read and I find it easier to flick to the front of the book instead of the back.

But hey, I'm definitely not mr average.

to be really picky i like an overall map in the front and as you travel around to diferent areas a more defined map (more detail) as the characters travel around the world

and also helps to stop finding out what happens at the end too early.

When was the map put in? I've been waiting ages for a map to be put in the book but didn't think it was coming so soon, what are peoples thoughts on the map? Also when you say mass-market, what does that mean? Smaller in height and larger in depth? or something else?

Hey Ry. To clear up the terminology. Mass market refers to the smaller, cheaper paperback that typically comes out a year (or thereabouts) after the hardback and teh larger paperback which is known as the trade paperback.

The map is only included in the mass market paperback which was published in September.

I far prefer the front of the book because that's how I'm used to using them. I like my maps in the front and the appendices in the back.

Although I do like having a cast of characters in the front of the book just by the map

yes i agree cast can be a good reference but does stop you doing the encyclopedia at a later date!!

I don't like maps, as they are usually drawn with more reference to art than cartography. However, they can be nice, I have maps for a few of my own stories actually. Front of book is the place to be.

not if you use some of the cartography programs available these days, they can be very accurate
