Now, as any who have bought the mass market of Cry of the Newborn will have discovered. There is a map. It is at the back of the book.

It's something Gollancz are trying out because there is a feeling that some potential readers are put off by maps in the front of books.

But what do you think?

I must admit I prefer the front. You get an idea of the land before starting to read and I find it easier to flick to the front of the book instead of the back.

But hey, I'm definitely not mr average.

When was the map put in? I've been waiting ages for a map to be put in the book but didn't think it was coming so soon, what are peoples thoughts on the map? Also when you say mass-market, what does that mean? Smaller in height and larger in depth? or something else?

Hey Ry. To clear up the terminology. Mass market refers to the smaller, cheaper paperback that typically comes out a year (or thereabouts) after the hardback and teh larger paperback which is known as the trade paperback.

The map is only included in the mass market paperback which was published in September.

I far prefer the front of the book because that's how I'm used to using them. I like my maps in the front and the appendices in the back. Very Happy

Completely agree with Drizzt.

Although I do like having a cast of characters in the front of the book just by the map Smile

I don't like maps, as they are usually drawn with more reference to art than cartography. However, they can be nice, I have maps for a few of my own stories actually. Front of book is the place to be.

not if you use some of the cartography programs available these days, they can be very accurate

I have a little experience with this, me and a friend had been working on a similar exercise for David Gemmell, and even had his approval for the work, although in the last 6 months its been more my mate than me...too much work...
Bur we have timelines, family trees, charater lists against the books they appeared in and background on them and then started into the history of the drenai (world) the myth and mystery of who is who how they evolved etc..
maps, even some character art.

but his death sort of stopped the project, dros tried to speak with the publishers but they might be looking at a existing author to carry out the work. twas fun at the time though!!

Front, as I usually don't look in the back of the book, before I've read it Wink .
