Good question, I always just think of him as a Julatsan.
He was meant to join the al-arynaar so would that make him ynissul?

Hey Lizzy,
I read the Raven books a long time ago and was a member then so it's the second time around for me athough I forgot my old username.
Al-arynaar are from every thread aren't they? Whereas Taigethen are Ynissul only?
It's been such a long time since I read the books I can't remember if there was any mention of threads in Elf Sorrow? Or if Ilkar was Immortal?
I've got RavenSoul on order so maybe there will be some reference in there? |

Morning, morning. Hi Tyrrean and welcome.
Yes, TaiGethen is an Ynissul-only elite because of the particular skills of the thread in terms of combat, speed, balance etc. The Al-Arynaar are a military force drawn from every thread and in the beginning were designed by Takaar to be a statement about the harmony amongst the elven threads.
As for Ilkar, he was an Ixii - best mages, but a shorter-lived thread. There is a section in one of The Raven books (and shamefully, I cannot remember which) where Ilkar worries about how he will go on after his human friends are dead and he lives on for four hundred years or so. That's a pointer towards his thread lineage if you want to look hard  .

There are different lineages of Ynissul and so on?? I would like to know.
Yea I cannot find the part that mentioned Ilkar being an Ixii or anything abt lifespans. Do u mean number of years?
If they are immortal why did they have to suffer from the Elfsorrow? My friend who has just started reading is wondering about immortality O.oo Immortal doesn't mean live forever?  |

Being immortal doesn't mean you are immune to disease or can't be killed by weapons or magic. Just that if you stay healthy you will live forever rather than say 80 years like the average healthy human.
The different threads of elves have different life spans.

Hi everyone 
Actually, I believe the thing with Ilkar's longevity was mentioned in "Ravensoul", when he met Rebraal and he asked about Ilkar's greatest fear to make sure it really was his brother. He said something about hundreds of years of bleak grief after The Raven had gone to their graves, if I remember correctly.
Another piece was in "Or So Legends has It", when Hirad calmed down enough to talk with Sirendor and Ilkar without the urge to kill them. He asked if Ilkar wouldn't get bored of being alive, because he had about four or five hundreds years of life. (By the way, I loved how Ilkar told Hirad he was thirty seven while he clearly had to be older and still the adorable barbarian believed )
Or so I remembered.
On the other hand, I'm pretty curious just how old Ilkar was during the whole Raven thing. After all, he left Calaius a hundred years earlier - according to Rebraal - but he had to be older than that, right? Anyone has an idea? |
