mmmm...now im intrigued......and im also not...
have found my self slipping away from fantasy the last year or two, only a few authors make me come back, Gemmell, Barclay, fiest, Hobb and Martin. nothing else seems to do it for me...seem to more enjoy Historical fiction...which i think is very linked with fantasy...just without the mythical creatures... |

I agree with Manty. Cardies are so restricting.
Anyway.....YAY! New books _________________ "I sit on my arse, not my head." - Baron Gresse. |

What's with us? I'm slipping a bit from fantasy as well, I just got a few books from the library and none are fantasy exactly...The Picture of Dorian Gray...I,Robot...20,000 Leagues under the Sea...Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde...
I was in the mood for a bit of the more classic fiction I guess, all legendary books in their own rights. I already know the basics of all the books and I've never read any of them but I love to read about literature and it's amazing how much of the story you can absorb through other people's essays etc. _________________ Ian Fulguirinas(dragonkillernz) |

That's not to say, of course, that I'm not interested in James' book...I've just found that I'm a bit more apprehensive of fantasy authors that I'm unfamiliar with...I used to get books out just at random, now I tend to stick with who I know or stories I've heard of, and occasionally branching out into unknown books and authors, like the Electric Church that I just finished. But only very occasionally nowadays _________________ Ian Fulguirinas(dragonkillernz) |

i think its because a lot of fantasy has become....formulaic..its the same story told slighty differently.
Historical fiction may give a prescribed frame work, but can be played with for plot flow and the stiory becomes about the writers ability to write good characters.
They are also relatable: EG: Simon Scarrows eagle series is set in roman times,...but follows 2 roman squaddies...brilliant writing and great characters, who can go anywhere in the roman empire in their time slot...its a time rife with fantastic epic tales.
there are some great cross overs as well, Naomi Noviks Historical / fantasy series, its got all the good stuff from a great fantasy naval series, but she threw in an ari force of dragons...inspired idea!
i think we may see more fantasy books of this ilk soon |
