|
|
Scott Lynch?s Gentlemen Bastards Sequence is looking to be shaping up quite nicely. I?ve just finished the second book in the seven (I think) book series and whilst so far both books have hinted at some grander story arc, they manage to tell a fantastic story that could almost be read as a stand alone novel.
The series is centres on Locke Lamora, a professional confidence man and thief as he cons his way into and out of trouble.
The world is quite well developed, with the Lies of Locke Lamora being set in a fantasy world version of Venice and the events of Red Seas under Red Skies take place in a Las Vegas style city and a pirate ridden sea.
The two books so far have been full of twists and turns, ingenious cons and witty banter.
As I mentioned, the books released so far are part of the 7 book series and Scott Lynch has hinted at greater things to come and no doubt more complex situations for Locke and Jean to get into only to come up with some outlandish plan to get out of it. _________________ "You know what Jack Burton always says... what the hell?" |

Two very good books. Book one was a brilliant read with giggles and thrills aplenty. Book two... had a lot to live up to after book one's success and, for me, while still being a damned good read, didn't quite pull off the spark of the original and I think the last 60-80 pages were rushed a bit.
But, overall, two very good books and I'm looking forward to seeing what's in store next. _________________ Pagan Music |

I've just started book 1 (about 90 pages in) and it hasn't quite grabbed me yet. I'm hoping it will after all the good stuff I've heard about it. _________________

I agree with you about the last section of the book, it did have a rushed feel to it but I don't think it did any real harm. I think I did enjoy the first book more as well, but the second had it's on particular charm. It had more action and fight scenes than the first and didn't get as bogged down in the flash backs either.

It's worth sticking with it. I had the same problem when I first started the book - couldn't get into it at all. When you reach the point when Locke and co are grown up and the full plot starts to reveal itself it should grab you. _________________ "You know what Jack Burton always says... what the hell?" |

Book one's on my table downstairs, and will be the next thing I read. My friend has raved about it, as he his pleased to find a fantasy book that doesn't rely on saving the world to be a good read (not that there's anything wrong with that of course!). He's not totally convinced about book two yet, but he's only just started it. I shall check back later when I've made a start on book one. _________________ If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine. |

This is all very odd but it's the next one on my reading list too after I've finished the Blade Itself! _________________ "Constant Vigilance!" |

Well Abercrombie and Lynch (pun intended) are the two rising stars of fantasy genre. They've had a lot of hype around them, most of which is very well deserved, so it's likely they are on most fantasy fans "to read" list.
Lizzy - how are you finding Lies of Locke Lamora? Hope you've manged to get into it? _________________ "You know what Jack Burton always says... what the hell?" |

Glad you enjoyed it, are you planning to read the next in the series? Red Seas is much easier to get into as it doesn't need to tell the back story. _________________ "You know what Jack Burton always says... what the hell?" |

You should be able to pick up a signed copy, judging by how last year went. Good book. _________________ Pagan Music |

I really enjoyed this book. The banter betwen the main characters, the fact that Locke can't do everything himself (like some heroes in books) and the way he dealt with The Spider made me laugh out loud. Which gest you strange looks on the bus! _________________ If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine. |
