some people view the whole vampire thing as an erotic thing so it's possible. _________________ "Right so we're going to steal a bomb that can be remote detonated, take it back to our base and then huddle around it? That sounds like a great plan." |

I haven't read any vampire books besides Dracula. I have seen plenty films and even a play. From my viewpoint Vampires always have a dark sexiness to them. The way they get their victims is usually in a sexually predatory way. So I reckon it could well fit.
Remember Bram Stoker's Dracula with Keanu..that had some racy erotic bits in IIRC. _________________

Hmm, from the ones I've read in the past i'd say it depends, really. There are a lot of vampire books out there that have erotic scenes in them, but equally there are ones that don't. _________________ "I sit on my arse, not my head." - Baron Gresse. |

My sister reads a lot of these books, mainly by a woman called Sherrilyn Kenyon, and thoroughly enjoys them. Just how erotic they are I don't know, but I do believe there's quite a bit in there.
I understand Ann Rice is quite explicit as well. _________________ Pagan Music |

Blame Laurell K. Hamilton for the current popularity of vampire erotica mate. Her Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series started out as a relatively straight action-take on the modern-day vampire / lycanthropy tropes, with some added raciness thrown in for good measure, but after the first five or six books it basically degenerated into soft porn with minimal plot tacked on.
And for some reason that's just made them even more popular than they already were...
Of course, I only read the first ten, so she could have gone back to the all-action stuff for the last couple... _________________ www.uksfbooknews.net - fantasy, sf, horror and graphic novel news from UK genre authors, creators and publishers.

lol
I don't believe she did.
Normally vampire books do contain sex but personally I think it should have some sensible context and not just be bonking purely for the sake of having it in the book.
I think all more recent vampire books have a large amount of pointless (no pun intended) sex and in most cases it spoils what could be a very good book. _________________ A very happy Yule to all!!

Vampires are supposed to be very sensual beings, touched by darkness the ultimate vice is in their hands, that of giving death. I think sex in a vampire book is a waste of paper when there are other ways to portray their lusts.

Like most people have said, some do some don't, a lot of modern day gothic vampire stories do have quite a bit. Especially between two vamps themselves, first bloodlust then sexlust *shrug*. vampiricism is seen as an erotic act. The biting of ones neck is the same as kissing it. Other things have been tacked on and ho the modern day vampire emerges. Who's blood which apparently doesn't run can still make them rise in more ways than one after dark. _________________ Come see me at my other spot locations:

M'Colleague Sandy posted an interview on UKSFBN with Jo Fletcher of Gollancz books about their new 'Gollancz Romancz' range, just this morning... _________________ www.uksfbooknews.net - fantasy, sf, horror and graphic novel news from UK genre authors, creators and publishers.

Don't know whether that news is depressing or a good thing... but rather predictable/expected, I think.
There is a theme throughout US publications at the moment (rather Laurell K Hamilton originated, (Ariel, you beat me, I think I only got to book 8!) but also partly the Buffy/Angel comedown) extending to werewolves and any number of paranormal creatures.... Kim Harrison, Charlene Harris, Tanya Huff... see also paranormal detectives (Jim Butcher, Tanya Huff).
The role of sex and the vampire has been pretty well documented with the vampire the consequence of repressed Victorians receiving most publicity.
(That Stoker bloke has a lot to answer for!)
As Lizzy says, the Coppola Dracula did emphasise that aspect; it's a little more subtle in the Stoker book.
I think some of the new Games Workshop/Solaris imprints out early next year seem to follow the supernatural mould too.

Howdo Hobbit, welcome aboard mate...
Like any other genre or sub-genre, it comes down to the individual quality of the authors concerned. Personally, I'm a big fan of the Jim Butcher books because they're well-written, fast-paced, engaging and have great characerisation. And Jo (the missus) reads plenty of the other supernatural stuff, partly for the same reasons, and partly because she's been a horror fan since she was 12.
But the same thing will happen (or most likely is already happening) as helped to kill off mainstream horror sales in the mid '90s - a lot of stuff just gets churned out and thrown to the reading public in order to ride the wave and make a fast buck, whether it's actually well-written or not.
In that interview Jo Fletcher is making the point that she's only going to publish material she thinks is good because she has the reputation of her list to defend, whereas the Orion higher-ups (who all work for Hachette now, technically) seemed to be the ones keen to chuck out any old rubbish just so long as it's got supernatural porn in there somewhere... _________________ www.uksfbooknews.net - fantasy, sf, horror and graphic novel news from UK genre authors, creators and publishers.
