So, what are yours? Obviously a little booked about a band of mercenaries released in July is on everyone's list (if not, repent!) but, aside from James's new one, what else are we all eagerly chomping at the bit for?
For me, the main ones are:
'Blood of Elves'; A. Sapkowski
'Wrath of a Mad God'; R. Feist
'Dance with Dragons'; G. R. R. Martin
And whatever the new Terry Brooks novel is called, too. _________________ Pagan Music |

'Blood of Elves' by Sapkowski definately. Can't argue with that one.
'Blood Alliance' Raven Dane is a must read!! (I got a test read of it before it went to be edited.) Granted it's changing a bit in places but I thoroughly recommend it to those who've read the past two and in fact to anyone who hasn't.
Go pick up a Raven Dane book. They rock!! _________________ "I sit on my arse, not my head." - Baron Gresse. |

"Blood of Elves" is surely worth reading (I do hope you get a decent translation, though), but if you read Sapkowski's stories before, this is a bit different. Not so funny, certainly, and less playing with motifs taken from fables and tales. More serious. But the characters do develop nicely.
I can't tell you much more, I read it 15 years ago and then I loved it.
My "must-read" list is mostly in Polish, so I guess you won't be interested in that, will you? |

The Burning Man and Lord of Silence by Mark Chadbourn.
The Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie, out in a few days
Anything by Joe Hill
Tom Lloyd's next book (the name escapes me), and Scott Lynch's final book in his trilogy. These last two I don't know when they are due out.
And Matter by Iain M Banks, which is out now and I need to go and buy _________________

"Last Argument of Kings" by Joe Abercrombie
"The Grave Theif" by Tom Lloyd
"Ravensoul" by James Barclay (obviously but it did need mentioning I think)
"The Burning Man" Mark Chadbourn
and the new discworld novel thats apparently out in september.
"The name of the wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. My mate Darron has this and swears by it so I tihnk I should give it go at least.
Im unsure on whether I'll pick up the third Locke Lamora book right away since I've still to read Red seas. Actually, still have to go out and actually buy it. _________________ "Right so we're going to steal a bomb that can be remote detonated, take it back to our base and then huddle around it? 'Last Argument of Kings' - Joe Abercrombie
'The Born Queen' - Greg Keyes
I don't know what Terry Brooks' next book is called but that's another that I'm looking forward to.
If you like horror then Brian Keene's 'Dark Hollow is well worth a look as well... _________________ Graeme's Fantasy Book Review

Problem is, in fantasy and s-f translations from English are common, but translation into English are extremely rare. Sapkowski is here an exception but he got translated into most European languages by now.
But if you really want to know - Grzędowicz, Kozak and Brzezińska are authors whose novels I'm eagerly awaiting. |

Goes to demand they're translated into English. _________________ "I sit on my arse, not my head." - Baron Gresse. |

I already have a long list of pre-orders on amazon for books coming out this year...:
The Steel Remains by Richard Morgan - a renown sci-fi author having ago at fantasy. The synopsis certainly sounds interesting, but if I'm honest it was the pretty cover that first attracted my attention!
Last Argument Of Kings by Joe Abercrombie - from what I've heard from people luckly enough to get an proof copy, it is the best of the series so far. Really looking forward to it.
Small Favour by Jim Butcher - the tenth book in the Dresden Files series.
Backup by Jim Butcher - a stand alone spin off from the Dresden files that is to have illustrations from Mike Mignola of Hellboy fame.
The Republic of Thieves and The Bastards and the Knives by Scott Lynch - the 3rd in the Gentleman Bastards series and the prequel story (takes place just before Lies).
Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss - This was supposed to be out this year, but has been delayed till next year now. However, amazon still seems to think it is coming out in Aug. Second book from The Kingkiller Chronicle and the follow up to the amazing The Name of the Wind
The Dark Volume by G.W. Dahlquist - the sequel to The Glass Book of the Dream Eaters. A strange little (large) book, but very enjoyable. Looking forward to what comes next.
Of course I'll also be getting Ravensoul by Mr Barclay and be greatly missing a release from Mr David Gemmell, whom, I'm sure if he was still with us now would have had something due out this year as well.
I'm also planning to have a crack at the Riftwar series by starting off with Magician by Raymond E. Feist and make my way though Mark Chadbourn books. _________________ "You know what Jack Burton always says... what the hell?" |

I'm reading this one at the moment, I'm not sure if it matches 'Last Argument of Kings' but it's well worth a look based on what I've read so far _________________ Graeme's Fantasy Book Review

Only got my copies of the Ascendant books over the weekend, so I suppose they were my choice for this year.
As for actual 2008 releases, bar Ravensoul, I'm not sure - haven't really kept up with my reading as much as I'd have liked to over the last 12 months - been too busy elsewhere to get hold of anything or keep track of what's coming out! _________________ Yes, I'm still alive.
